Last week London's Leftfooters Football Club hosted a world class sporting event right here in the centre of the city. Over 1,000 players and supporters from 16 countries descended on the top rated pitches in the Regent's Park to play 3 days of point accumulating qualifying matches. The rain held off and the weather stayed fine as teams from as far afield as Sydney, Mexico, Argentina, Japan and South Africa battled it out in 3 divisions of men's and women's football. London's teams did exceptionally well with the London Falcons and Stonewall Lions reaching the division 1 semi finals to play SAFGay Argentina and Samurai Japan respectively. Sadly an all-London final was not to be as the Falcons lost 4-1 but Stonewall flew through with a magnificent 10-0 over Japan.
As Saturday dawned bright and sunny, hundreds of players and spectators headed east to the Olympic borough of Waltham Forest and the home of Leyton Orient Football Club, the magnificent 9,000 seat Matchroom Stadium. This was a much anticipated showdown between London Stonewall Lions and SAFGay Argentina ... a replay of last years' final in Buenos Ares where, thanks to some ringers in the team, the Argentinian team were victorious. Even for the non-football followers it was a spectacular match with non-stop action going first one way and then the other. The Lions' strong front line kept most of the play in the oppositions half and at half way they were 3-0 up. In the second half as the game slowly slipped from the Argentinians fingers play got a little messy with feet and elbows flying, but not rising to the bait the Lions continued to play their game, hammered in a couple more and secured a solid and well deserved 5-0 victory. On hand to present the prizes was the conscience of English football, Sir Trevor Brooking, as well as representatives from the FA and Met Police. It was a long hard week of great football but the Stonewall Lions made it look easy, in spectacular style they scored 47 goals in their 8 matches while not conceding a single one, and have added to their list of achievements to now become British, European, Gay Olympic and World champions.
Congratulations to Hackney for also taking gold in the women's division. Full results on www.LondonWC2008.co.uk |
